There has recently been a great deal of discussion about how sun protection creams affect your ability to synthesise vitamin D. It’s true that your skin needs some sunlight to produce vitamin D. And yes, maintaining sufficient vitamin D in your blood is vital for many organ systems and lowers the risk of a variety of cancers.
If you have concerns about your skin’s UV exposure and your vitamin D profile, do see your dermatologist for a simple blood test to double-check. If your vitamin D blood level is below 75 nanomoles per litre, you should take a supplement for optimum health.
